My quest to hit 50 mpg average on my commute continues. I’m getting closer.

Kinja'd!!!

At least I’m kicking butt on the EPA numbers. No hypermile tactics. I’m just setting the cruise control around the speed limit (70 in 70, 60 in 55, 65 in 65 zones) and accelerating or slowing as traffic dictates. For the bulk of my commute the speed limit is 65 with occasional red lights. I found setting the cruise at 60 or 70 means I get caught at more lights (4-6 vs 2-3) than when it’s at 65. To really beat the lights you have to have minimal traffic and go 85+ but that puts you in super speeder ticket territory.

The biggest bonus to this experiment is I'm much more relaxed.

You’ll probably get it if and when they finally finish all the construction.

Life would be so much easier if from sugarloaf pkwy (the one just after the QT heading east) had no lights and all were exits/on ramps.

My experiments with short distance hyper-miling with the FieSTa on secondary roads (below 50mph, few stops, some hills) have gotten me as high as 56mpg over 20 +/- miles... then I get the bug and mash the go-pedal and that average flies right out the window... but you can dooo eeet!

Pretty much. Before Collins Hill Road, it’s like they hired Detroit’s road crews to pave it back in 1982 and then forgot to repair it ever since. Then after Collins Hill, it’s just pointless red lights every two minutes to allow one guy in a rusty pickup to get in your way going 30mph. And then there’s the whole mess AT Collins Hill.

316 just needs to be closed down entirely for a couple weeks while they work nonstop to fix it.

As I search for 50l/100km...

Not really. It’s not that bad, thankfully.

I know what you mean. The first few attempts to just see what I could do all failed because of my impatience. Then I started seeing what it would do and the challenge became more interesting.

I would support that (and suffer through 78) if it would get done like that.

Ha. I had to look up the conversion. That would be awful. I'd go bankrupt.

So would I. Fortunately it’s nearer 15l/100km in very-mixed-mostly-heavy-paw driving.

There should be an oppo challenge to see who can get the highest (percentage and real amount) above EPA figures over a certain distance.

And here I am excited that my sti gets 25 mpg vs my m3’s 19....

That’s some really impressive gas mileage though. I think the new Mazda 3’s are very impressive.

EPA ratings are rarely right. Our Fit is rated 27 city 33 hwy. We get 33 city(unless I’m driving) and we’ve seen 40-45 hwy.

I actually did it yesterday morning. I found I have to accelerate pretty hard to hit EPA numbers. Driving normally and setting the cruise control to the speed limit or a little higher I get at least 2 mpg better on the highway.
